Fred Lowen was a major influence upon Australian design. As Jew born in Germany, Lowen fled Europe before WWII and started a small business as a wood turner upon his arrival in Australia in 1945. He later founded well-known 'Fler Furniture', with his close friend Ernest Rodeck. In 1968 Lowen left Fler and started the beginnings of Tessa Furniture; success came quickly to the company. In 1981 Lowen won the Advance Australia Award for Outstanding Contribution to Furniture Design and in 1987 he was admitted to the Order of Australia for his services to furniture design and manufacture. Tessa suites continue to be in demand for their quality, durability and style.
